The Women’s Art Register is Australia’s living archive of women’s art practice (cis, non-binary and trans inclusive) and a national, artist-run and not-for-profit community and resource. Assessed as a ‘Collection of National Significance’ through the Heritage Collections Council in 2009, this unique archive houses the images, catalogues, posters and ephemera of over 5000 Australian and International artists.

Established in 1975 by prominent Melbourne feminist artists and curators during the United Nations' groundbreaking International Women's Year, the Women's Art Register continues to advocate for greater visibility, diversity and acknowledgement of women in the Australian artworld. Our community supports artists through professional development, events and exhibitions, to amplify the voices of Australian women artists.

The Women’s Art Register collects material by self-identified women artists and documents a broad range of artistic practices. It has published the independent magazine The Bulletin for 30 years.A selection of these items will be on display at City Library throughout July to December. They tell some of the stories of W.A.R's contribution to contemporary and historical debate on the women’s movement, feminist art, Australian politics, education and gender equity.
